KNX Association is evolving, working to bring even greater simplicity and innovation to its ecosystem, and deliver positive environmental impact long-term. This series of blogs is offering context on the wider ecosystem, the work and initiatives that are underpinning this evolution and the impact for our stakeholders.
Digitization is transforming every home, hotel, stadium, hospital, office. Every building. By extension, cities are becoming more intelligent as devices, systems and infrastructure merge into connected digital ecosystems. This convergence brings enormous opportunity, but it also introduces complexity. The paradox: For buildings to become more intelligent, the technology powering them needs to become simpler. This is where KNX is placing its strategic focus. Simplicity is no longer an aspiration; it is a requirement.
Lowering entry barriers
Lowering barriers to entry is a key priority for KNX, starting with clearer, benefit-focused communication tailored to the needs of each community member – from KNX Members and industry professionals, right through the value chain to end customers. By explaining the technology in a more accessible and relevant way, KNX is making it easier to understand the value of our technology and become part of our powerful community. In parallel, we are also working to support Smart Installers, a growing group of professionals who prioritize practical, installation first smart building solutions, to expand the reach of the KNX technology ecosystem.
Simplicity of the system
KNX is taking concrete steps to make its technology, tools and ecosystem simpler, more accessible and more impactful. These aren’t promises, they’re initiatives already underway. For manufacturers and developers, the KNX Open-Source Stack will soon provide certified KNX IoT software that accelerates product development, reduces complexity and lowers the entry barriers for new innovators. Meanwhile, we are considering development of a Marketplace for Scientific Projects to connect KNX Members with researchers and industry partners, creating an ecosystem where ideas can be shared, tested and developed, ultimately strengthening the pipeline of future innovation. KNX is also advancing practical AI-enabled use cases, such as intelligent automation that demonstrates how advanced intelligence can coexist with simple, user-friendly experiences. Additionally, a new approach for KNX Energy Management will make designing and commissioning energy-focused solutions faster, clearer and more accessible.
Simplicity through tools
Simplicity can also be strengthened through enhancing our support and collaboration tools. We’re boosting efficiency and accelerating device linking with a new Bulk Linking App and also a new feature in ETS 6.4, the Multi Linking, while Semantic Import will remove manual steps by automatically importing structured data based on the KNX Information Model (KIM). Our Bulk Linking and Multi Linking capabilities represent the first steps toward our broader Smart Linking vision, simplifiying configuration by enabling more efficient linking.
A unified KNX Web Ecosystem in which all KNX sites will be unified into one system is central to KNX’s simplicity strategy. We are currently working hard in the background to overhaul our web ecosystem to deliver a frictionless, consistent and intuitive digital journey for every KNX stakeholder. We are upgrading tools for newcomers with an integrated eCampus and new Digital Twin tools as part of the program to update KNX Virtual 1.0. This will ensure that information, technology, tools and support are easier to find and use. As our strategy, vision and mission evolves, so will our organization’s identity to highlight our long-term commitment to simplicity, innovation and sustainability.
Energy management made easy
Finally, simplicity serves a higher purpose with KNX. KNX’s energy management strategy is positioning the organization at the heart of a rapidly expanding global sector, where simplicity is essential for widespread adoption, implementation and scalability. As part of this, we’ll roll out a new configuration approach for KNX energy management products to make these implementations faster and simpler.
Building peace of mind
KNX is taking deliberate steps, across tools, training, technology and user experience, to make smart projects easier to design, deploy and use day to day. This evolution is powered by the KNX community – installers, manufacturers, developers, researchers, and partners. Together, we are shaping an ecosystem where intelligence and simplicity work hand in hand. Ultimately, all these efforts to simplify smart building technology translate into peace of mind for homeowners, building occupants, and investors, ensuring that living, working, or investing in KNX enabled spaces is reliable, seamless and stress-free.
