Detailed Description

Energy Efficiency

The usage of automated functions already save energy in every installation. Especially the usage of KNX has a lot of potential for further energy savings, which can contribute to a better environmental footprint. Be extending KNX to more functions and applications, energy savings of up to 60% can be realised. Thanks to the flexibility of KNX, these functions can easily be implemented in this installation

Innovation

Smart homes and buildings are always an upgrade in comparison to a conventional installation. Not only automated functions and a higher level of comfort contribute to a higher living standard, but also the possibility to be ready for coming innovations. Thanks to the usage of KNX, the door has been opened to integrate new innovative solutions, using the worldwide STANDARD for home and building control.

Applications Used

  • Lighting - Switching, Dimming
  • Heating, Ventilation & Air conditioning (HVAC) - Central & Automatic Control, Individual Room Control / Zone Control
  • Security and Safety
  • Operation and Visualisation - Switches / Push Buttons, PC Visualisation, Touch Panels & Display Panels
  • Energy Management/Smart Metering
  • Other
  • Automation and Remote Access - Logical Functions
  • Blind and Shutter Control - Individual Control, Automatic Programs

Customers Description

This commercial retrofit project focuses on the sustainable migration of an existing LON‑based room automation system to KNX. As the LON technology has reached end of life, the building automation system was upgraded step by step, starting with the first of three floors. A key objective was to minimise environmental impact and costs by fully reusing the existing cabling infrastructure, avoiding structural changes and material waste. Lighting and blind control are fully implemented via KNX. KNX room controllers and sensors provide temperature values, setpoints and operating modes to the Honeywell Hawk 8000, which handles HVAC control, valve actuation and central logic. All systems are connected via BACnet/IP to the existing Honeywell building management system and visualised through Niagara Optimizer. The project demonstrates how KNX can be efficiently integrated into heterogeneous legacy environments to increase energy efficiency, interoperability and long‑term future readiness.
