Lighting control in practice: Using DALI-2 efficiently in KNX installations

The new KNX DALI-2 actuator Colour from JUNG enables flexible lighting scenarios by controlling up to 128 DALI devices.

Requirements for modern lighting solutions are constantly increasing. Today’s systems are expected to deliver high visual quality, reduce energy consumption, and adapt to changing usage scenarios. Popular features include the ability to set variable colour temperatures and create precise RGBW scenes for representative spaces.

In addition, demands on IT security are growing. With the implementation of the NIS-2 Directive expected in Germany, the secure integration of lighting control into the overall building automation system is becoming increasingly important. The revised directive, aimed at strengthening cybersecurity, will apply to around 30,000 organisations. Operators of KNX systems who implement KNX Secure with appropriate components will be able to meet these new requirements.

The KNX DALI-2 actuator for up to 128 devices

With the secure-capable KNX DALI-2 actuator Colour, JUNG hast introduced a device that controls up to 128 DALI devices across four independent DALI systems. Each line can support a maximum of 32 devices with symmetrical wiring, or up to 40 devices with asymmetrical wiring. The actuator enables control of modern DALI luminaires of Device Type 8, including adjustment of colour temperature, RGB and RGBW. For planners and installers, this means they can design flexible lighting and colour scenarios while using a standards-compliant solution according to IEC 62386-209.

Broadcast control without DALI commissioning

In projects with recurring room types, the DALI-2 actuator enables efficient scaling of lighting concepts. Once defined, settings for colour temperature, scenes or RGBW effects can be duplicated in ETS and transferred to additional rooms. In addition, the broadcast function allows each line to operate without individual DALI commissioning. This provides significant time savings, especially in uniformly equipped offices or seminar rooms.

Easy integration into KNX

The DALI-2 actuator is an updatable KNX device with KNX Data Secure. This enables reliable implementation of lighting control in security-relevant projects. Configuration is carried out via ETS, and firmware updates can be conveniently installed using the JUNG ETS Service app. For on-site testing, a manual operation mode is available directly on the device. It allows connected luminaires to be switched and dimmed without an ETS project – simplifying final inspections and initial function tests. If a DALI control gear is replaced during operation, the actuator automatically transfers the stored parameters to the DALI ECGs when restarting. This ensures a consistent configuration without the need for reprogramming.

Flexibly configurable functions

In addition to classic switching and dimming, the actuator offers a range of advanced functions. These include forced control and blocking functions to support local operating or safety concepts. An integrated operating hours counter facilitates predictive maintenance planning. For practical applications, the actuator also provides a staircase lighting function with pre-warning, as well as separate on/off delays per line. A standby-off feature further contributes to energy savings. Thanks to its multimaster capability, the JUNG actuator also supports direct integration of DALI-2 sensors – for example for presence or brightness detection. These sensors act as application controllers and can autonomously perform control tasks such as automatic dimming or adjusting the lighting based on current room usage.

Use case: variable lighting control in hotel operations

In conference hotels with variable room usage, the importance of flexible lighting control becomes especially clear. Several seminar rooms with identical lighting groups require activating, neutral-white task lighting, while the restaurant area needs warm-white light to create a welcoming atmosphere. In addition, operators often want striking RGB colour settings in the foyer for special events. The DALI-2 actuator from JUNG meets all these requirements with a single device: independent DALI systems supply different areas of the building, which can then be centrally controlled or automated in scenes via KNX.

DALI-2 components and training from JUNG

The DALI-2 actuator Colour 4-gang is part of the JUNG KNX portfolio. Additional components such as gateways, sensors and control units enable consistent planning and implementation of KNX installations with DALI devices. JUNG also offers training courses, webinars and technical documentation to support the use of KNX and DALI-2 devices. This gives professionals access to a wide range of certified products and hands-on knowledge modules – enabling them to implement lighting control systems reliably and in line with current technical and regulatory requirements.
