ETS4 - Installation & Licensing

Before Installation

1. Attention: The ETS4 is uses newest Microsoft© technologies as .NET Framework 4.0 or SQL 2008 Server.

a. We strongly recommend checking all necessary system requirements (see system requirements) in advance and update your PC if necessary.

b. Please also check the corresponding hardware requirements (see system requirements); eventually it is necessary to extend your PC hardware.

2. Take a security backup of your important (ETS) data in any case.

3. Execute the ETS4 setup.

Remark: The ETS4 can be installed in parallel to an existing ETS3 on a computer

Attention: The installation with preconditions may exceed 30 minutes.

After Installation

What happens with my ETS3 projects and product data bases?

The Installation of ETS4 does not change such ETS3 data.

What happens with my ETS3 licenses?

The Installation of ETS4 does not remove ETS3 licenses, ETS3 is still licensed.

Type of Licenses

On ETS3 established license types will be supported by ETS4 as well. ETS4 has the two following license types:

PC dependent license (Host ID license)
PC independent license (Dongle license)

Licenses itself will be saved in files, so called license files (file extension *.lic).

PC dependent License (Host-ID License)

The Host – ID License allows working with ETS4 on a single computer.
The Host – ID is a PC specific number
On that computer you want to work with, the Host – ID license must be activated in advance.

Background:	During the licensing procedure a specific code number (Host-ID) of your PC will be evaluated. This code number will be forward automatically and will be used to generate your ETS license key. This license key is saved in a license file.
Result:	The license file you obtain afterwards to activate your ETS is only valid for this specific PC. Therefore you cannot work on another PC with ETS and this license key (in the license file).
Advantage:	You do not need a dongle; hence you do not have to plug anything on your computer to work with ETS.
Disadvantage:	When changing the PC or after a change of PC components you must apply for a new license key (Host- ID change). You may lose valuable time, especially if it happens when you don't have an internet connection.
Host-ID change:	Host-ID change (replacement key) can be done two times a year free of charge in your online shop account. For each extra replacement after the second one, you will be charged €50 per replacement key. Please note that KNX Association is liable to charge half the price of the paid license if the changes are too regular or too numerous.

PC independent License (Dongle License)

The Dongle license allows working with ETS4 on several computers (but not simultaneously).
The Dongle has an integrated, specific number: the Dongle - ID. The dongle itself is similar to a USB stick.
On each computer you want to work with, the dongle license must be activated in advance and the dongle must be plugged in. Without an inserted dongle the ETS4 runs always as an ETS4 Demo version.

Background:	During the licensing procedure the in the dongle integrated code number (Dongle ID) – which is also printed on the dongle cover – will be evaluated. This code number will be forwarded automatically and will be used to generate your ETS license key. This license key is saved in a license file.
Result:	You will obtain a license file to afterwards activate your ETS which is linked to the dongle and not to one PC.
Advantage:	When changing the PC or after a change of PC components you must not apply for a new license key. You must only install the ETS and Dongle license again if you format/ replace your hard disk. Plug in the dongle and restart ETS. You can use ETS on each PC; assumed the ETS is installed and the dongle is plugged in the USB port
Disadvantage:	The dongle must be always plugged in the computer, otherwise the ETS runs as an ETS Demo version. The dongle can be lost.
Dongle lost:	KNX Association is not legally liable to replace lost dongles. You can ask for a replacement dongle and license key which will be cost half the price of the paid license. So be careful to keep it in a safe place at all times.

How do I license (activate) my ETS4?

To license ETS4 please perform following steps:

1. Start ETS4.

2. During the ETS4 licensing procedure identify the necessary license code

a) For a Host- ID license identify the corresponding Host - ID

b) For a Dongle License identify the corresponding Dongle - ID (starts with FLEXID=9-…, in which only the part behind the “=” will be used)

3. The corresponding ID will be copied into clipboard by the button under the window; afterwards you can also save it in a text file.

4. Visit the KNX Online Shop

5. Register with your credentials.

6. Choose “My products” in the left menu, there you find the ETS4 version you ordered. In the key column you find a field where you can insert the Host – ID or Dongle ID, which you identified in step 2
(such as copy out of the text file or from the clipboard).

7. After inserting click the „Add“ button, short time afterwards the (button) field will change to a link which you can click to download the license file (with embedded license key).

8. Save the license file on your hard disk. Don’t forget the location where you save the file!

9. Eventually start the ETS4 again and click in ETS4 licensing screen the field “Install License“(see picture below).

10. A file selection dialog appears. Choose now via this file dialog the saved file from point 8 and confirm with OK.

Important: For a “Dongle License” the dongle must first be plugged in that PC, on which you perform yet the licensing. Windows® recognizes the dongle and informs you via a corresponding message.

11. Your ETS4 is now licensed; you will see this on the extra entry in the window “Available Licenses”.

Important: If you want to use the “Dongle License” on more than one computer you must redo the steps 9 and 10 on each of these PC’s.
